A future development proposal for what was formerly known as Southland Mall and much of the surrounding area was announced recently by Cutler Bay officials in an email newsletter on the town’s website. The financially troubled mall now is owned by Urban Retail Properties and an ambitious plan to renovate the area has been proposed.

“Big things are on the horizon for the future of SouthPlace City Center,” the posting said.

“The Town of Cutler Bay continues to stay closely involved in the redevelopment of the former Southland Mall site, working directly with the ownership team. Urban Retail Properties has just released a promotional video showcasing their ‘City within a City’ vision and the exciting plans for this project. From retail and dining to healthcare and community spaces, SouthPlace City Center is shaping up to be a transformative development for South Dade.”

The proposed plan boasts of 150,000 square feet of food and beverage businesses. a boutique supermarket, medical offices, a hotel, dog parks, pickleball courts and 5,000 residential units in high-rise apartment buildings. The existing South Dade Performing Arts Center is included in the overall plan.
