Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins alongside Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) have launched a new pilot program, “Potholepalooza,” which continues through June 15. This blitz-like program will be an all-hands-on-deck concentrated and concerted effort to repair as many potholes as possible.

“Potholes are not just a nuisance issue; they are more importantly a public safety issue.

South Dade and District 8 have a serious pothole problem, and we are addressing it,” Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins said.

This collaboration will aim to make all roadways in District 8 safer and in good, functioning condition by fixing one pothole at a time. If not fixed easily, certain potholes might need to be included in resurfacing plans at a later time. Three pothole patcher trucks, each with a two-person crew, are in operation under the Road and Bridge division of DTPW. The teams fill potholes in the county with an average of 12–14,000 per year and lay 20 tons of concrete each week.

Commissioner Cohen Higgins affirmed “District 8 has a disproportionately high number of potholes compared to the rest of the county. By launching this new pilot program, we will make a concerted and concentrated effort to ensure that the streets of District 8 remain safe for our residents.”

The “Potholepalooza” program only works if the potholes are reported. You can help by reporting potholes to 311 or 305-468-5900. Additionally, a resident may download the 311Direct app.
