Eco Summer Adventures program wins $20,000 ‘Meet Me at the Park’ grant

Miami-Dade Parks Eco Summer Adventures program, exclusively for summer campers enrolled at Sgt. Joseph Delancy Park, 14450 Boggs Dr. in Richmond Heights, is the winner of the 2018 Meet Me at the Park campaign and will receive a $20,000 grant from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and The Walt Disney Company, including Disney/ABC Television Group and ESPN.

Throughout April, people took to social media to vote on one of three programs. The Eco Summer Adventures program at Sgt. Joseph Delancy Park was one of 15 park improvement projects nationwide to receive grant funding. The $20,000 grant will support an eight-week, environmental enrichment program for summer campers enrolled at Sgt. Joseph Delancy Park consisting of hands-on environmental education workshops and weekly field trips to Crandon Park.

“NRPA is proud to collaborate with The Walt Disney Company and their ESPN and ABC Television media networks on these exciting programs,” said Rebecca Wickline, NRPA senior vice president of development. “ESPN and Disney ABC Television group have the power to help us reach hundreds of millions of people and their investment supports our vision that everyone deserves a great park and will bring children and families closer together through the power of parks and play. Congratulations to this year’s grant recipients.”

Maria I. Nardi, Miami-Dade Parks director, responded, “We are honored and thankful to the NRPA and The Walt Disney Company to receive this award for the fourth year in a row. Parks provide safe places for youth to be active, social, and to explore the environment. The Eco Summer Adventures program will provide the underserved youth at Sgt. Delancy Park, with a deeper environmental experience that brings them up close and personal with nature and will engage many for the first-time in discovering the beauty and wonder of Miami’s marine and coastal areas.”

Last year, Miami-Dade County residents voted for Gwen Cherry Community Garden to receive $20,000. With that funding, the community now is able to enjoy a community fruit and vegetable garden. Now in its fourth year, the Meet Me at the Park campaign is part of $1.5 million investment from The Walt Disney Company, supporting NRPA and Disney’s combined goal of providing one million kids and families with greater access to play.
