‘Fight Like A Girl Fitness Event’ at Cornerstone Church, Feb. 8

The third annual “Fight Like A Girl Fitness Event” will take place on Feb. 8 at Cornerstone Church, 20740 Old Cutler Rd. in Cutler Bay. The purpose is to raise awareness and funds for the National Cervical Cancer Coalition.

Maria Guzman, Susan Luria and Monica Faison-Finch are the hosts. Faison-Finch is the Chapter Leader of the NCCC-Cutler Bay and is in her second year of remission from the disease.

“We are still looking for sponsors, vendors and silent auction items,” Faison-Finch said. “Every gift helps at least one more woman understand her risk and what to do to avoid cancer. Cervical cancer is the only cancer we can wipe out in our lifetime.

Last year in the United States, about 11,000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer each year and 4,000-plus women died.”

Tickets are $20 with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the National Cervical Cancer Coalition-Cutler Bay Chapter; 70 percent of the proceeds stay in the community.

Registration for the event begins at 6:30 p.m., and the event itself is from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

“I’ve been working with the National Cervical Cancer Coalition (NCCC), a program of the American Sexual Health Association (ASHA), an almost 100-year-old nonprofit,” Faison-Finch said. “They’ve been helping me with my personal goal of educating women in my community so that no one need ever die of cervical cancer again. It is entirely too hard to see someone you love die of a preventable disease.

She said she was diagnosed with Stage Three on Mar. 28, 2016, and it was the most horrible news.

“I thought: how could this happen? I have a son in college who lost his father just four years ago and this can’t be happening. What would my husband or son think? How can I break the news. I only missed one exam and that is all it took. Fortunately, I knew something didn’t feel right. I usually was a fun outgoing person. Now I am so tired, just wanted to stay in bed and sleep.”

She said that was the first sign something was wrong.

“If I didn’t listen to my body, just a few more weeks and I too would be a statistic. I wanted to live; I was too young to lose to this horrible disease.”

Faison-Finch said she decided, if she could just beat this, she would share and make sure no other family or woman would have to go through what she did. She vowed to spread awareness and help raise funds, so others could get the exams that they need.

“We will keep going until cervical cancer stops taking the lives of our loved ones,” she said.
