The Dade County Farm Bureau board of directors has accepted the resignation of president Alice Pena, who is a candidate for the Miami-Dade County Commission seat for District 9 currently held by Dennis Moss. Vice president George Butler III will step up to complete Pena’s term.
The membership is due to elect a new slate of officers in October.
Pena served as president of Dade County Farm Bureau since October 2011. For eight years she has served as a director on the board of Dade County Farm Bureau. She also served as treas- urer prior to being elected president. Pena is the owner/operator of PNS Farms, an organic egg operation in Miami-Dade County. Farm Bureau’s Women’s Committee named Alice Pena “Woman of Distinction in Agriculture” for 2012, and honored her at the annual Women in Agriculture luncheon in February.
Directors thanked Pena for her steadfast service to the Farm Bureau, and wished her well on her campaign for county commissioner.
Butler has served the Farm Bureau as director and vice president since October 2009. His family’s nursery, Butler’s Foliage, has been in business in South Dade since 1961. His father, George Butler Jr. served as president of Dade County Farm Bureau from 1976 to 1977.
Dade County Farm Bureau represents more than 4,000 members, over 1,000 of whom are involved actively in agribusiness and represent over 900 agricultural operations. Dade County farmers provide an economic impact of over $2.57 billion to the local and state economy.
