Colorectal Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in America among both sexes. In fact, one in twenty people will develop this devastating disease.
Community Health of South Florida Inc. (CHI), in collaboration with The American Cancer Society and other key community partners will host a Colorectal Cancer Awareness event on Monday, March 31, from 10am to 2pm at the Doris Ison location 10300 SW 216 Street, Miami, FL 33190.
“An estimated 26,270 men and 24,040 women will die from colorectal cancer in 2014. This is a serious disease that should not be taken lightly”, said Dr. Elizabeth Philippe, a CHI doctor who will be giving tours inside the giant colon to help explain the dangers of colon cancer.
Participants at this event will have the opportunity to take an educational walk through a realistic giant colon and learn prevention techniques and the importance of early diagnosis.
“About 1 in 3 adults, between 50 and 75 years old are not getting tested as recommended, “ said Chris Varela, Account Representative, Primary Care Systems Florida Division/American Cancer Society, Inc. “When adults get screened for colorectal cancer, it can be detected early at a stage when treatment is most likely to be successful, and in some cases, it can be prevented through detection and removal of precancerous polyps.”
Health educators and medical staff will be on-site to answer questions and provide nutrition and exercise advice for a healthier lifestyle. Free cancer screenings will be available for those who qualify.
