Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee on Dec. 7 presented Homestead Senior High School with a check for $43,000 to help the football team, cheerleading team, school band, faculty, staff, and community members travel to Tallahassee for the football state championship game.
After a successful football season, thanks to the hard work and determination of the Homestead Senior High football team, they had the opportunity to play against St. Thomas Aquinas for the state championship title. Unfortunately, the team had been struggling to collect the necessary funds to travel for a chance to win.
Commissioner McGhee heard about the challenge and knew exactly what to do to bring the title home. During the Dec. 7 Homestead Senior High School pep rally, Commissioner McGhee, along with the South District Miami-Dade Police Department, Trick Daddy, Mike Smiff, and District 9 staff, were present to donate $43,000 to cover all travel expenses.
“I am immensely proud of the Homestead Senior High School football team. Everyone involved has been working incredibly hard not to have the chance to play for the championship title,” Commissioner McGhee said. “They deserve the opportunity to win big, and I want to make sure we can make that dream a reality. I am committed to fully supporting our youth and their endeavors.”
After the school’s pep rally during the night, Commissioner McGhee, elected officials, the District 9 community, and more gathered together for a special send-off party to show support and pray for the team’s success and travel safety.
The Homestead Senior High School versus St. Thomas Aquinas state championship football game took place on Saturday, Dec. 9, at Florida A&M University.
