Members of the Kiwanis Club of Homestead-South Dade, one of South Florida’s most active community-service organizations, recently learned of the plight of the area’s wildlife, including birds and squirrels, from representatives of Pelican Harbor Seabird Station in Miami.
The presentation — during a weekly Kiwanis meeting — by Marianna Niero, communications manager at Pelican Harbor, included a rescued screech owl, Mowgli.
“Presentations like this keep our club up to date on the activities of other nonprofit, community-service organizations such as Pelican Harbor Seabird Station,” said Kiwanis Club vice president Mia DeVane. “They do so much for wildlife, that the impact they have in South Florida is simply amazing.”
In 2024, Pelican Harbor — Miami’s premier native wildlife hospital which has become a world-class wildlife rescue, rehab, release and education center — rescued 2,476 wild animals. Most of the rescued animals are birds (particularly pelicans), but they also treat small animals like possums and squirrels.
“The work we do is very important, not only for the animals but for the entire ecosystem here in South Florida,” Niero said. “Rescuing these animals will help future generations of Floridians enjoy the beauty of these creatures.”
