The Kiwanis Club of Homestead-South Dade, one of South Florida’s most active community service organizations, recently visited Florida City Elementary School to present the prestigious BUG (Bring Up Grades) Award to 45 students.
“As an organization, we at Kiwanis realize that not every student is an ‘A’ student,” said Homestead Kiwanis president Emily Guzman. “But its important to recognize those students who have worked to bring their grades up. This type of award encourages the kids to continue their hard work, while, at the same time, instilling a feeling of pride and accomplishment.”
The ceremony marked the club’s first in-school BUG ceremony since the COVID pandemic.
The students were brought to the school’s media center for the ceremony, where they got to hear their name announced before they got their BUG certificate and a handshake from Guzman. In addition to their certificates, the first through fourth graders also received a variety of awards — such as BUG cups, pencils, bookmarks and a “I brought up my grades” refrigerator magnet — to reinforce the BUG message.
“This was a great day for the students and their teachers,” said Florida City Elementary’s media specialist Jill Daceus. “Recognizing students in this way not only encourages the award winners, but other students as well. Thank you, Kiwanis!”
