The Kiwanis Club of Homestead-South Dade, one of South Florida’s most active civic organizations, has expanded its monthly homeless feeding at the Chapman Partnership in South Dade.
They’ve added a serving of books.
Now, in addition to serving dinner to the residents — which the club has done for nearly 20 years — it has added its popular “Just One Book” program to its monthly service at Chapman.
“This seemed like a natural extension of our club’s service to the South Dade area,” said newly installed Kiwanis president Janina Carranza. “We have the “Just One Book” table at most of our service projects, so it just made sense to extend it to our dinner service at Chapman. Most people don’t realize the number of families who are affected by homelessness.”
Kiwanis Board member Oscar Munoz, who heads up the club’s book give-a-way program, was stunned by the reception from the Chapman residents.
“The kids really responded positively,” Munoz said. “And the parents we very excited about the opportunity to read to their kids. There were a lot of happy families.”
