Long delayed Caribbean Blvd. Bridge project delays frustrating residents
Little work has been done on bridge during past three years.

A Miami-Dade County bridge replacement project on Caribbean Boulevard that has been stalled for three years, frustrating Town of Cutler Bay officials and residents, is now closer to resolution.

In March of 2021 the Town the Cutler Bay issued the following announcement:
“The project is located along Caribbean Boulevard over C1-N Canal, between SW 103 Avenue and SW 103 Place within Miami-Dade County Commission Districts 8 and 9. The proposed project consists of replacing Caribbean Boulevard Bridge no. 874431.

Construction is tentatively scheduled to commence in April 2021. Project is anticipated to be completed in November 2022.”

Long time Cutler Bay resident Marilyn Horne expressed her thoughts on the bridge project.

“I want to voice my frustration and disappointment over this project being set aside for so many years,” Horne said. “We have had an 80-foot crane hovering over that beautiful little bridge, and those residents on the canal are so fed up. So is the little private school next to the bridge that can’t get them to come move their equipment off their school’s baseball field. The equipment on it had grass growing up to its doors.”

Residents also felt that it was dragging their property values down.

In researching the matter, it was discovered that the contractor for the project, American Empire Builders, had been working on an identical bridge project in Pinellas County that also had been stalled for three years, as reported recently in the Tampa Bay Business Journal, and that Pinellas County officials were terminating their contract. Miami-Dade officials are following suit, according to information provided by the office of District 8 County Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins.

Alejandro Barrios, assistant directorm Construction, Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works, issued the following statement:
“After a thorough review, it has been determined that the progress on this construction has not met the expected standards, and we share the disappointment in the prolonged delays and the inconvenience caused to the community,” Barrios said. “In light of these challenges, the decision has been made to terminate the current contract with the contractor responsible for the project. “Given the importance of this bridge in serving as a means of egress to several communities east of US1, it is in the best interest of residents and the traveling public to complete this vital infrastructure project promptly. To that end we will initiate a re-bidding process to bring the project to a successful and timely conclusion. We understand the frustration and inconvenience caused by the delay. We are working hard to resolve this issue and resume the construction as soon as we have a new contractor on board. In the interim, the current contractor will begin to demobilize and restore the area.”
