In what promises to be a remarkable evening of orchestral mastery, the Dennis C. Moss Cultural Arts Center presents “L’viv National Philharmonic: Direct from Ukraine” on Sunday, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m.

Among the evening’s selections will be a masterwork from renowned Ukrainian composer Yevhen Stankovych, conducted by principal conductor Theodore Kuchar.

The L’viv National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine was officially established in the medieval city of L’viv in 1902. During that first season, under the direction of principal conductor Ludwik Vitezslav Czelianski (1870-1931), the orchestra performed nearly 115 concerts. Though the philharmonic did not operate during the German occupation (1941-44), many of the world’s greatest musicians have since performed with the orchestra, a legacy that continues today.

“L’viv stands as one of the great cultural centers of eastern Europe, where music has long occupied the heart and spirit of its existence,” said Eric Fliss, managing director of the Moss Center.

Despite the ongoing war
“When we are able to experience international musicians/ensembles, I believe it provides a very particular opportunity to hear music of their compatriots performed with the full perspective and shared experience of their countrymen,” Fliss said. “We are so thankful that the musicians of the L’viv National Philharmonic are able to actively tour the world, despite the ongoing war in Ukraine — and that our stage is the first on their 40-concert tour across the U.S.”

Beginning in 2018, the L’viv National Philharmonic has been associated with the famous American conductor of Ukrainian origin, Theodore Kuchar, who, after two seasons as the orchestra’s principal guest conductor, was appointed the principal conductor of the L’viv National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine in 2022.

“The L’viv National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine promises to deliver intricate instrumentation and a masterfully adept performance under the baton of Maestro Kuchar, the most recorded conductor of his generation,” Fliss said.

Three Remarkable Works
The evening’s program consists of three works: Yevhen Stankovych’s Chamber Symphony No. 3 for Flute and String Orchestra, bearing the subtitle, “Peace Shall Defeat War.” Rarely performed with non-Ukrainian ensembles, Maestro Kuchar showcases his orchestra’s ability to keep an audience spellbound, even as it challenges listeners with a unique compositional construction technique.

Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16, is easily one of the most popular piano concertos of all time. Particularly beguiling is the beginning of the third movement. “Perhaps one of the most impactful pieces of music ever written,” Fliss said.

Capping what will be an evening of powerful music is Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92. In his own words, when this work premiered in 1813, Beethoven remarked that it was one of his best.

Over the years, the L’viv National Philharmonic has regularly participated in multiple international festivals, including the International Festival of Musical Art, “Virtuosos,” and the Ukrainian-Polish Festival, “Discovering Paderewski.” The orchestra has performed worldwide, including in Poland, Italy, Spain, France, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, and China.
