More than 100 residents were in attendance at the Cutler Bay Town Center on Oct. 24 as Mayor Peggy Bell delivered her final State of the Town Address and bid farewell to all in what some described as an emotional evening.

Bell served a total of 13 years on the Cutler Bay Town Council and was elected mayor in 2014. She is now “termed out” under the rules of the town charter and it was her last State of the Town Address. Mary Ann Mixon, who served eight years as Seat 1 Councilmember, also is term limited and will not be returning to the council.

Bell was honored at the event with a proclamation from the town designating Oct. 24, 2018 as Mayor Peggy Bell day. Another proclamation stating the same thing came from Miami-Dade County District 8 Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava’s office and was signed by County Mayor Carlos Giménez and other county officials.

Cutler Bay resident Jean Tong-Noon, who attended the event, had praise for both Bell and Mixon.

“They leave a positive legacy of accomplishments and the town is in great standings,” Tong-Noon said. “The address was followed by a reception filled with laughter, well wishes and lots of food and entertainment.”

Mayor Bell said later that being honored in that way meant a lot to her.

“I am humbled to have been presented with Miami-Dade County’s Proclamation during my final State of the Town Address as the Mayor of the Town of Cutler Bay,” Bell said. “Miami-Dade has been my home for the past three decades and to be recognized by Miami-Dade County for my years of service to Cutler Bay and to Miami-Dade County is one of the greatest honors and privileges that has been bestowed upon me. “Although we did not see eye-to-eye on every item we undertook, working alongside the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners has been an enriching and rewarding experience that has facilitated and promoted the bettering of our town,” she added.
