Town of Cutler Bay Mayor Tim Meerbott hosted the annual State of the Town Address in the town’s council chambers on Oct. 22. The theme was “Resilient Roots, Thriving Future.
The event was opened by town manager Rafael Casals who began with the Honor Guard’s presentation of colors, the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the singing of the National Anthem.
The State of the Town video was displayed in which the town councilmembers highlighted significant achievements from the past year. Mayor Meerbott described the community as “One of the most vibrant, livable, enjoyable places in South Florida,” emphasizing how Cutler Bay’s journey from a small Air Force Base town to a thriving, inclusive community reflects its resilience.
Highlighted were comments about the Southland Mall’s $1.5 billion redevelopment project; development of Legacy Park and Municipal Complex; newly named Veterans Park, and the town’s emphasis on environmental stewardship with the recent acquisition of Coastal Ridge Preserve, an 8.5-acre conservation area adjacent to the Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands.
The mayor pointed out that after six years of planning, the Franjo Road Improvement Project had broken ground officially, marking an essential milestone in improving local roads, adding pedestrian-friendly pathways, and incorporating modern amenities like bus bays and landscaping.
The councilmembers highlighted the community’s involvement in infrastructure enhanceents, showcasing Cutler Bay’s commitment to incorporating resident input into town planning.
Mayor Meerbott, in praising the progress the town, pointed out that property values in the past few years had risen by 34 percent.
“A 34 percent increase in property values is amazing,” Mayor Meerbott said. “It just goes to show you the value that where we live has and is going to continue to have. We are no longer just what used to be called the blue collar forgotten about people of the South. Now we’re someplace where people want to live and raise their families, and not that we didn’t want to before but now everybody knows.
“I think that’s a great thing, and what’s more important, we talked about resiliency. We have been able to maintain our mileage rate again at the low rate of 2.88833 percent per $1,000 of assessed value and that’s I think the ninth lowest in the county, that’s with 36 cities.”
He continued, “We have much more affluent communities that are right around the range of us, but we are really low compared to many of our sister cities. So we’re very efficient.
We are one of the most efficient governments in all of Florida. We’ve been recognized by the state legislature as being one of the most efficient governments in all of Florida.”
The event concluded with a catered reception.
