The New Author Ceremony for Pages for All Ages, a program founded by MDC Homestead professor Dr. Yanely Webb that works with young children of migrant workers in the Homestead and South Dade communities to improve their literacy skills, took place recently at MDC’s Homestead Campus.

Children who participate in the program are paired with MDC students who serve as their mentors.

Pages for All Ages began more than 10 years ago with 11 MDC students and has grown to include more than 500 students and 425 mentees from the community for this enriching experience. MDC students have provided more than 3,500 hours of service while earning academic credit and content knowledge.

How it works
Students meet with their mentees for eight weeks at various migrant camps and collaborate on the creation of their own book. At the end of the program, the students participate in the Pages for All Ages New Authors Ceremony at MDC’s Homestead Campus.

The children attend with their parents and family members who proudly celebrate them as new authors.

Pages for All Ages works with children of mostly Hispanic descent for whom English is not their first language. In order to bridge this gap, the program partnered with Cuatrogatos Foundation, a local nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide children access to quality books and literacy in Spanish.

The cohort that was honored in the Mar. 15 ceremony are participants of the session that started in January of this year, which includes 12 students and 12 mentors.
