The next meeting of the Palmetto Bay Garden Club on Oct. 24 will have a special guest speaker, Roger L. Hammer, who should be of interest to gardeners because he is an expert in wildflowers.
Longtime Garden Club member Richard Dorn is enthusiastic about the club’s guest.
“Roger Hammer is very well known and he’s been a naturalist for more than 40 years,” Dorn said. “He conducts tours through the Everglades to study wildflowers, in the same way that Paul George does tours around Miami to visit important historical sites.”
Besides being a botanist, Hammer is a naturalist, photographer, author and speaker in Florida. Author of several guides to wildflowers, he met Marjory Stoneman Douglas when he received the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Award in 1982. The Tropical Audubon Society honored Hammer with the prestigious Charles Brookfield Medal in 1996, and in 2003 he received the Green Palmetto Award in Education from the Florida Native Plant Society.
Hammer helped oversee the restoration of more than 100 acres of pine rockland when he worked as a county naturalist.
The Palmetto Bay Garden Club meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month from 7 to 9 p.m. in the second floor Edward and Arlene Feller Community Room of the Ludovici Park Library, located at 17641 Old Cutler Rd. The meetings are open to the public.
