The sixth annual Cutler Bay Senior Games are taking place in October and those who wish to participate can register now. The deadline to register is Monday, Sept. 16.
“The Cutler Bay Senior Games are one of only 21 qualifiers for the Florida Senior Games and the only qualifier games in Miami-Dade County,” said town manager Raphael Casals. “Participants who move on to the Florida Senior Games would then have an opportunity to participate in the National Senior Games, which annually draw around 13,000 participants.”
All Floridians ages 50 and over are welcome to participate in the Cutler Bay Senior Games.
The categories to compete in are: tennis, pickleball, basketball, billiards, bowling, shuffleboard, table tennis, horseshoes and swimming. For the past few years 50 or more people in the South Florida area have participated each time in the town’s local games, which take place at Saga Bay Park, Cutler Ridge Park, East Ridge of Cutler Bay, Bird Bowl and Town Hall.
The Senior Games movement began in Florida in 1974 and was spearheaded by the Florida Sports Foundation. The Senior Games is a multi-sport event program for adults age 50 and over. The Cutler Bay Senior Games is sanctioned by the Florida Senior Games, so participants may qualify to take part in the state games in Clearwater in December.
The Cutler Bay Senior Games is coordinated by the Town’s Parks and Recreation Department and Communities for a Lifetime Advisory Committee with the help of local corporate sponsors. This year’s sponsors include Chen Senior Medical Center, TD Bank, East Ridge of Cutler Bay, Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava, Humana and Silver Sneakers.
