Roadway improvements project temporarily closes Caribbean Blvd.

Roadway improvements project temporarily closes Caribbean Blvd.A major road improvement project for the Town of Cutler Bay is resulting in the temporary closure of Caribbean Boulevard from Coral Sea Road to SW 87th Avenue (1.76 miles). The closure began on Monday, Oct. 14, and is expected to be in place until Jan. 30, 2014, with the overall completion of the project scheduled for the fall of 2015.

The Public Works Department participated in a Concerned Citizens meeting on Oct. 1 at the Cutler Ridge United Methodist Church to provide another public information session to educate residents on the upcoming project, according to town manager Rafael Casals.

“Approximately 40 residents attended the Concerned Citizens meeting in which, the town’s Public Works director, design engineers, project inspection engineers, and the town’s contractor attended,” Casals said. “Upon completing a detailed presentation that provided the goals of Roadway Improvement Project, the town’s TEAM members were available to answer questions and comments from the audience. The meeting lasted over an hour and a half.”

The project will include the construction of two traffic calming circles where Caribbean Boulevard intersects with Gulfstream Road and SW192nd Drive; installation of decorative street lighting and traffic signals, new storm-water drainage system, native Florida landscaping, decorative treatments at key intersections, and new pedestrian concrete crosswalks. Dedicated bike travel lanes eastbound and westbound and new bus “pull-out” bays and bus shelters also will be added.

Funding for the project, estimated to be $9,181,346, will come from the People’s Transportation Plan (PTP) of Miami-Dade County and the Town of Cutler Bay.

Access for local residents and public services such as Miami-Dade Solid Waste, U.S. Postal Service, school buses, and emergency vehicles will be maintained in the work zone.

“Caribbean Boulevard is seen as a ‘Main Street’ within our town and its improvement will enhance overall mobility while improving the visual quality of the community,” Casals said.
