Be careful! Every year we hear reports on the news about people’s shopping purchases being stolen out of cars and muggings in parking lots, as well as increased burglaries at homes. Unfortunately, the season that brings out the best in people also tends to bring out the crooks as well. And each year, the county police department issues Safety Tips for Holiday Shoppers, with recommendations we’d all be wise to take heed of. “Be aware of your surroundings, be alert to suspicious people and vehicles and avoid dangerous situations,” they tell us. Also, when shopping at the malls and other places, don’t leave packages in your vehicles where they’re in plain sight and a temptation to thieves. Ladies, keep your purses zippered or closed and hang onto them, don’t leave them unattended in shopping carts. Don’t use ATM’s in secluded areas, especially after dark. If a suspicious vehicle has followed you home after shopping, don’t pull in and get out of the car, go to the nearest safe location or an area where there are people and call the police. Municipal and county websites have additional tips to help you avoid being a victim of crime.
