MCS Seniors are participating thru mid-April in the SIFMA Foundation’s Stock Market Game (SMG), giving the students a chance to invest a hypothetical amount of money in an on-line portfolio. Starting with a virtual cash account of $100,000, students strive to create the best-performing portfolio using a live trading simulation. They work together in teams, practicing leadership, organization, negotiation, and cooperation as they compete for the top spot.
Students research and evaluate stocks to make decisions based on what they’ve learned. Teams trade common stocks and mutual funds from the NYSE, Nasdaq and AMEX exchanges; earn interest on cash balances; pay interest, if buying on margin and pay a commission on all trades. To determine why certain stocks perform the way they do, or why the broader market has moved up or down, they need to understand how the economy works, and to calculate their returns they need to do the math. Since 1977, more than 10 million students have participated in The Stock Market Game™ program.

Miami Christian continues to find creative ways to teach its students and a historical wax museum presented by second and third graders, was no exception. Under the direction of teachers Ana Campos and Soraya Cabrera, students researched a famous person who impacted lives in a positive way, presented the facts on poster boards, and then dressed up like the famous personages might appear at a wax museum, each student standing like statutes in a different area of the room. When parents, faculty and staff visited and pushed a red “Push” button attached to each, the student came to life to present a speech about themselves.

On the athletic front, both the Boys’and Girls’ Basketball Teams won their respective District 1-A titles. The boy’s team defeated Princeton Christian in overtime to win the honors while the girls beat Colonial Christian for their title, and then went on to defeat Calusa Prep in a Regional Quarterfinal, and Northwest Christian in the Regional Semifinal before losing to Hollywood Christian in the Regional Championship.

Elementary School hosted a Parent Student Breakfast February 18, Gladys Mata, Christy Aguirre, Marie Aguirre and the elementary teachers hosting a beautiful breakfast to thank the parents for their support. The turnout and the weather were wonderful. The same great weather held true for an elementary school Field Day providing challenges as well as good fun. From sack races to throwing basketball into hoops and soccer, skills were tested in friendly competition. Meanwhile, the fifth grade class fields its own soccer team with boys and girls, and they’ve also had a great season.
