September is National Sewing Month and also the time when people are getting ready to make their Halloween costumes.
The Town of Cutler Bay is looking forward to its annual “Halloween Spooktacular,” a highly popular event for residents that has adults, children and even pets coming out in costumes to compete for prizes and to have fun.
Joann Fabrics in Cutler Bay is ready to assist in the effort with a wide range of costume patterns, special Halloween fabrics and decorations. The store at 10875 Caribbean Blvd. and others in the area are already seeing an interest in costume planning, according to one store manager, Monica.
“We’re definitely seeing more people coming in now,” she said. “This is our busiest time of year.”
Cutler Bay Joann Fabrics hours are Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Last year’s “Halloween Spooktacular” event was spread over two nights at Cutler Ridge Park with an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people attending the free, family friendly event. This year’s events are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 27, and Saturday, Oct. 28. The spooky events will take place both nights from 6 to 10 p.m. and admission to the party is free.
First there will be the usual “Trunk or Treat” distribution of candy in a safer environment than traditional neighborhood trick-or-treating. Next there will be a costume contest for all ages. Participants must register in person at the event, limited to the first 25 participants to register, per age group. Sign up closes at 7:45 p.m.
The costume contest categories are:
● Infants to 2 years
● 3 to 6 years
● 7 to 9 years
● 10 to 13 years
● 14 to 17 years
● 18 and older
● Pets
Later that night there will be inflatables, a haunted house, music, food trucks and more. The following night is the Golf Cart Parade. The parade route and map will be provided online via the town’s website at https://www.cutlerbay-fl.gov/. Lineup for the parade will take place on the west soccer field at Cutler Ridge Park.
Town manager Rafael Casals was impressed with the size of the event.
“Our ‘Halloween Spooktacular’ has become the biggest event we host year-round,” Casals said after last year’s event. “We’re very pleased with how this event has turned out and for the wonderful participation of our staff, police, vendors, volunteers, and attendees.”
One of the traditional features, a Haunted House done in the park’s swimming pool building in years past, was changed last year to an outdoor Haunted Maze. Michelle Horne, who works for the town, designed, set up and ran the maze. She estimates that 1,100 people went through the constructed scary labyrinth. She will be running it again this year.
