The South Florida Youth Symphony’s recent live concert at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden was a rousing success with the community and special invited guests from Florida City Elementary School.

Celebrating its 60th anniversary, the Gold Medal and Emmy Award-winning SFYS attracted a standing-room-only crowd of more than 200 to its performance in Fairchild’s Garden House. Among those in attendance were nearly a dozen students from Florida City Elementary.

“This was a great event for the students,” said Jill Daceus, a Florida City Elementary teacher who accompanied the children. “They had the opportunity to hear these young, talented musicians play a ‘different’ type of music than they’re accustomed to and the interaction with the musicians after the concert was fantastic. Combine that with a setting like Fairchild and you have a once-in-a-lifetime, memorable experience.”

Sponsored by the City of Coral Gables and Fairchild, the concert’s additional sponsors included the Kiwanis Club of Homestead-South Dade and Bob Hilson Roofing and Sheeting.

The Kiwanis and Hilson sponsorships helped underwrite the visit from the elementary students, including ‘hands-on’ learning sessions with the students.

One of the country’s leading youth music organizations, the SFYS performed their “Bahamas Tour Preview” program at the Fairchild concert. Nearly 50 musicians, instructors and chaperones will cruise to the Bahamas and compete onboard Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas during spring break.

The SFYS program is sponsored with the support of Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Miami-Dade County Mayor and County Commissioners, The Children’s Trust, Miami-Dade County Office of Management and Budget, The Kirk Foundation, Publix Charities, The Nancy Friday Foundation, The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Miami Dade College, North Campus.
