The award-winning South Florida Youth Symphony recently opened its 60th season with a rousing, patriotic-themed free Veterans Day concert at Losner Park in Homestead.
The concert, attended by more than 1,500, was part of the City of Homestead’s Veterans Day Celebration. The celebration also featured the Air Force Reserve Band and performers from Sommerset Academy, South Dade High School and the Paramount Dancers.
“This was just a perfect evening to salute our veterans,” said Marjorie Hahn, SFYS executive and music director. “The weather cooperated, the crowd was enthusiastic, and our musicians really put on a show. Overall, a great experience for everyone.”
The evening ended — literally — on a high note with Homestead’s first drone show.
“This was a great event and the Youth Symphony exposed our community — particularly the kids — to music they might not get to experience,” said U.S. Air Force Captain Arnold Perez, president of the Kiwanis Club of Homestead-South Dade, one of South Florida’s most active community service organizations. “We wanted to show these kids the possibilities that await them and, thanks to the City of Homestead’s leadership and the dedicated sponsors, we were again able to create this enchanting experience for our community.”
The Kiwanis Club, in collaboration with the office of Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kionne McGhee, presented the SFYS portion of the Veterans Day Celebration.
The SFYS program is sponsored with the support of Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Miami-Dade County Mayor and County Commissioners, The Children’s Trust, Miami-Dade County Office of Management and Budget, State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, The Kirk Foundation, Publix Charities, and Nancy Friday Foundation.
