SMDCAC launches 2014-15 season with free concert, Backyard Bash
Event features Ribab Fusion from Morocco.

South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center will launch its 2014-15 season of performances with a free concert called Backyard Bash on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m.

The event will feature three bands, Ribab Fusion from Morocco and local acts Spam Allstars and Xperimento.

The event also offers a chance for community members to explore the center’s campus, meet the staff, look through the season schedule and secure seats for upcoming shows. Food trucks will be at the concert. The event is free but tickets are required. The public should contact the Box Office at 786- 573-5300 or go online at SMDCAC.org. The center is located at 10950 SW 211 St. in Cutler Bay.

A feverishly funky sign of a new era, Ribab Fusion celebrates Morocco’s Amazigh (Berber) culture as it flies from ’70s-style funk to Afropop vibes, from slow jams to high-energy call-and-responses choruses. The one-stringed bowed ribab weaves all the madcap diversity together, sometimes gritty, sometimes soothing as a well-played sax. It’s a jazzy mix that wows technically and sets people celebrating.

Spam Allstars generate a buzz for their rhythmic mixtures of electronica, Latin, funk, hip hop and dub.

Xperimento is a bilingual, multicultural band that blends world sounds such as cumbia, reggae, merengue, ska, salsa, and funk with elements of rock, R&B, hip hop and dancehall. Their songs are rhythmically driven, melodic, and catchy, making their live performances upbeat and fun.

They all come together for a fantastic evening of entertainment to start the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center 2014-15 season. Bring the entire family. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome, but leave coolers at home. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.
