South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center announces lineup for 2016-17 season

Entering its sixth season of providing quality entertainment to the communities of South Miami Dade County the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC), 10950 SW 211 St. in Cutler Bay, has announced the lineup of offerings in the performing arts and film for 2016-17.

This season SMDCAC continues to provide a Main Stage Series, Cabaret Series, Family Series, outdoor concerts and the Indie Flicks Series.

The center offers a subscription where patrons can create their own package of main stage performances and receive up to a 20 percent discount. In addition, this season, the theater offers for the first time a Dance Package with 25 percent off on dance shows and a Cabaret Package with 20 percent off on the Cabaret Series (applied to select performances).

Subscriptions and packages are on sale now and can be purchased at SMDCAC.org or by calling the Box Office at 786-573-5300. Single tickets go on sale Aug. 16.

The Backyard Bash season kickoff event on Oct. 15 features southern rock superstars Molly Hatchet as well as local bands on the center’s outside Concert Lawn. Food trucks will be there and attendees may bring lawn chairs and blankets. Patrons also may pick up information on the upcoming season and tour the facility. The concert is $15 in advance and $25 on the day of show. No coolers are permitted.

Highlights this season include dance main stage performances by Limón Dance Company celebrating 70 years of dance; Estampas Porteñas Tango Company, with thrilling tango fire; Aspen Santa Fe Ballet; MOMIX presenting a southwestern-themed spectacle, Opus Cactus; as well as the New York-based contemporary company Gallim Dance.

Also of note, this season’s production of Nutcracker by Miami Youth Ballet will feature former Miami City Ballet star principal dancers Jennifer Kronenberg and Carlos Guerra.

Jazz performances include: Jamaican legend Monty Alexander and the Harlem-Kingston Express; retro jazz group The Hot Sardines with a holiday performance; the acclaimed Allan Harris; the bluesy and soulful Marcia Ball; as well as the gypsy swing sounds of Occidental Gypsy.

A special outdoor concert, called BAM! (Beer and Music), will feature Louisiana’s zydeco music with Buckwheat Zydeco and the New Orleans-style, world-famous Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

World music and dance performances include: the West African and Algerian sounds of Ifrikya Spirit as part of a U.S. Department of State tour; classical Spanish guitarist Pablo Villegas; acclaimed Indian tabla player Zakir Hussain; direct from China The Peiking Acrobats, and a Bollywood spectacle, Taj Express.

Young children and teenagers alike have great entertainment options with family-friendly shows like B-The Underwater Bubble Show (all ages); Elephant and Piggie’s We Are In A Play (ages 4 and up); Vocalosity (all ages), from the creators of Pitch Perfect; and spoken word artists The Mayhem Poets (ages 13 and up).

The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center is managed by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, with funding support from the Office of the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.
