The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC) officially kicks off St. Patrick’s Day on Thursday, March 17, with its St. Patrick’s Day Plaza Party. The free family event, 6 p.m. at the Center’s Plaza in Cutler Bay, will include Finnegan Blue Band and performances by Breffni Academy of Irish Dance.
Headlining band Finnegan Blue morphs rock, bluegrass, gospel, and New Orleans funk for an unforgettable, toe-tapping performance. Sibling duo Anna Lee and Willie Fleming – joined by their father, Bill, Malcolm Jones (saxophone), Kevin Higuchi (percussion), and Oskar Beckmann (bass) – will deliver a high-energy performance “guaranteed to put a smile in your ears.”
Also performing is Breffni Academy of Irish Dance, a Miami-based cultural dance group led by Michael O’Hara and Nicola O’Hara. The O’Haras have both been awarded the title of “Master of Irish Dance” and serve as expert instructors, choreographers, judges, and mentors in the Irish dance community.
Their company’s performance includes a demonstration of traditional Irish step dancing, and an invitation for guests to learn the “Irish jig,” a spirited cultural dance that is done to Celtic music played on a “gigue,” an old word for fiddle.
“It is exciting to bring back free plaza events for the community of South Dade. This event is designed to showcase great music, highlight local culture, and encourage families to have a fun night out,” said Eric Fliss, Managing Director of the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center. “Our Plaza will come to life with the tradition and vibrancy of St. Patrick’s Day.”
The St. Patrick’s Day Plaza Party is a community event and will have food and drink available for purchase, in addition to raffles and giveaways.
No outside food or drink will be permitted. Information about this event is available by calling (786) 573-5300 or by visiting SMDCAC.org.
