The Deering Estate’s engaging Artist-in-Residence Program (AIR) has launched the application for the 2024 season. A call to artists opens on Thursday, June 1, 2023 for the Deering Estate AIR Program for visual, literary, performing, and cross-disciplinary artists. Artists are invited to apply before the deadline of August 31, 2023, 11:59 pm Eastern Standard Time (EST). The application is for studio residencies and non-studio project residencies at the Deering Estate that begin as early as January 15, 2024.
About the Program: The Deering Estate seeks to continue Charles Deering’s legacy of art patronage by supporting emerging and mid-career artists who work in various disciplines and media. The prestigious and competitive AIR Program is a direct extension of this legacy. It is a wonderful incubator for creative ideas, unique experiences, and collaborative opportunities that engage the public.
As a cultural arts organization, we are very proud of our program’s role in our artists’ careers, the positive interactions with the public, and the growing cultural partnerships. We have had the privilege of presenting and collaborating with internationally acclaimed visual artists, composers, musicians, playwrights, authors, choreographers, and performers.
Application Information: Interested artists must complete a formal application, which is available online on Slideroom. A printable Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document is available on the Deering Estate website to assist applicants with answers to common questions. You can find this and more information on the Deering Estate website.
Deadline for Submission: The complete application must be submitted by August 31, 2023, by 11:59 pm (EST).
Eligibility: Eligibility information is listed within the FAQ and application format. Please read carefully to choose the appropriate residency type.
Cost: No cost is associated with the application process or residency program.
Benefits: This program allows professional artists to pursue their artistic discipline, create a body of work, connect with other artists, and engage the public while interacting with the historical, archeological, and natural elements of the Estate’s inspiring environment. Artists are encouraged to interact with the public during studio hours whenever possible. Other benefits include access to archives, education and interpretive staff, and potential grant partnership opportunities.
The AIR program offers our residents free access to the site and/ or studio space for extended periods on our beautiful, inspiring, and historic site. Collaboration with other residents, Estate programs, and partners is encouraged and welcomed. Each artist studio is slightly different but provides space in one of our historic buildings for two to 12 months. We welcome shared and collaborative residences and seek to include a broad scope of contemporary and traditional artistic practices. The residence does not provide for overnight housing, and artists must provide their supplies.
