For the first time in South Florida, the South Dade Black History Center Advisory Board (SDBHCAB) paid tribute to the late South Florida football star D’Sean Perry, who tragically lost his life in a shooting at the University of Virginia in 2022.
Perry’s memory was honored through the “Love-Art-Football” exhibit during an opening night reception on Oct. 27 at the South Dade Black History Center, Larcenia J. Bullard Plaza, 14508 Lincoln Blvd. The event was organized to showcase Perry’s dual passions as his family approaches the one-year anniversary of his passing.
“It was divine intervention that allowed our center to show so much love and respect for the Perry family, and to share that experience with the community by presenting for the first time in South Florida the D’Sean Perry Exhibit,” said former Miami-Dade County Commissioner Dennis C. Moss, who serves as the SDBHCAB chair.
Moss and program director Diara Zeigler honored Perry’s parents, relatives, teammates, friends, and the wider community in a heartfelt reception. The event commenced with prayers and the lighting of a single candle, which was symbolic to remember Perry’s life.
Attendees then entered to view the exhibit, which not only highlighted the late Perry’s exceptional artistic abilities but also celebrated his successful football career.
Brenda McCallister joined the Perry family at the event. Michael Hollins, her son and Perry’s teammate, also was shot on Nov. 13, 2022. After several surgeries, he recovered and continues to play football.
District Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee and former Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan also were present at the opening night reception.
The exhibit is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, until Nov.14. To learn more about D’Sean Perry’s legacy, read about the nonprofit foundation created to serve the underprivileged youth in the community visit https://dseanspiritofcavaliers.square.site/.
