Cutler Bay had an “Open Mic Night” for the first time on April 22 and residents turned out to fill the seats of the council chambers. The idea was to give citizens a chance to voice their concerns to the Council in a more comfortable, less formal setting so they could ask questions and talk with the council members. It proved to be a popular idea, and town officials were happy about that.
“We are very pleased to have had such a great turnout at our first ‘open mic night’,” said Mayor Peggy Bell later. “Hearing from residents in a friendly, less formal setting gives us the feedback we need to better address their issues. Our manager, Ralph Casals, did an excellent job responding to all questions and concerns. We had eight public workshops last year in which we listened to the desires of the residents in order to formulate a five year plan for the town. This year we will hold three with this totally open format in various parts of the town. We feel we can better serve our residents when we listen to them.”
Something else that was very popular was the Bike-B-Que event that the Town of Cutler Bay participated in jointly on Saturday, April 25 with the Village of Palmetto Bay as part of the 2015 Earth Week celebration. Hundreds of bicyclists gathered at Lakes by the Bay Park in Cutler Bay before working their way north along the bike path to Ludovici Park in Palmetto Bay for a delicious barbeque lunch, a bike rodeo and other fun activities for kids. With a police escort to keep the route safe and perfect weather it turned out to be one of the best events of the spring. With something that much fun we’re betting they’ll do it again next year, too.
Mark this on your calendars… The next regular Cutler Bay Town Council meeting will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday May 20 in the Council Chambers at 10720 Caribbean Boulevard. For information call 305-234-4262.
World War II vets take note… on Friday June 12th the Homestead Military Affairs Committee will host an event at Homestead Air Reserve Base from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. to honor men and women who served in our United States armed forces during WWII. If you were in the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines or Coast guard between 1938 and 1945 you are invited to attend and bring photos and memorabilia for display.
