Tis the season for special events and changes too

Michael-Miller-photo1The holiday season that began with Thanksgiving and continues through New Year’s Day brings a lot of special events, such as festivals, concerts, parades and community get-togethers as well as being a time for families to gather and share special moments and memories. It’s a time when the old year is winding down and the next one is getting ready to begin. It’s certainly a time of changes for the Village of Palmetto Bay and the Town of Cutler Bay this year, since both have new mayors and several new council members filling the seats on the dais. Best wishes to all of them and to everyone who is actively involved in their community, in ways large and small.

Like music? We hear that the local group, Miami’s Top Brass, will be in a free concert on December 24, Christmas Eve, at St. Thomas Lutheran Church at 6:30 p.m. The church’s traditional family service follows that at 7:00 p.m., with a candlelight service at 11 p.m. Miami’s Top Brass, all professionally trained musicians, teachers and corporate business partners, has been performing in South Florida since 1990. Musical styles range from concert style repertoire for brass quintet or quartet, to ensembles for parties, park events, holidays, church festivals, weddings, solo performances with larger bands and orchestras. The church is located at 17700 Old Cutler Road. The group features AlanWolfe and Edward Ercilla on trumpets, Marjorie Hahnon on French horn, John Meagher on trombone and David “Doc” Collings on tuba. For information call 305-232-1227.

And speaking of music, Katie Burdick of Dr. E. L. Whigham Elementary School, 21545 S.W. 87 Avenue in Cutler Bay, tells us that their Chorus has been very active and will continue to be in the weeks ahead. They performed at Southland Mall on November 13 for the M-DCPS EXPO, recently produced a video which was submitted to Fairchild Tropical Gardens since Whigham is participating in the Fairchild Challenge, and performed at the Whigham Elementary Science Fair on Wednesday, December 3. Watch for them on December 17 when they will perform for the patients at Jackson Hospital Perdue Medical Center and for the shoppers at Southland Mall. That same night those talented and energetic kids will give a concert for parents in the school cafetorium.

If you need a Christmas tree we hear that the Cutler Ridge United Methodist Church in Cutler Bay will once again be selling trees in the lot located at the corner of Marlin Drive and Old Cutler Road. This has been a tradition for the past 24 years. The church uses the money they receive from sales to supplement their operating expenses and to support projects of the United Methodist Church in Florida and around the world. The address of the church is 20740 Old Cutler Road. For information call 305-235-6651.

And don’t forget to support the various toy drives for area underprivileged children. You’ll be bringing a smile to some kid’s face who might otherwise have no gift.
