In a recent video update, Cutler Bay Mayor Tim Meerbott, with earthmoving equipment behind him as well as most of the members of the Town Council, announced that work had begun on the new 16-acre Legacy Park and Municipal Complex.

“We’re really excited to be here because right now, today, we are officially starting Phase One of our Legacy Park, which is an initiative which has been going on for a very long time,” Mayor Meerbott said. “We’re preparing the land; we’re gonna be moving a lot of soil out, bringing a lot of other soil in. It’s the very first step. It’s going to take us over seven months just to go ahead and to get this stage of the project done.”

Mayor Meerbott explained that there was going to be a lot of activity, but they were going to be mindful of the homes in the area. There would be water trucks to keep the dust down and fences up on the sides to minimize the impact on the neighborhood.

“This is a major milestone in our journey that began with your input. We started off with charettes, so actually we started off over 16 years ago with an idea. We had over 30 public involvement meetings and, here’s the best part, we had over 65 percent approval from our community voting to do the bond to do this very important legacy park project which is going to have a great impact on the Town of Cutler Bay, so I want to thank you for your support.”

The town has selected the architects, hired the contractors and has started. Four of the 16 acres will be the municipal buildings — the Town Hall, the Police Department and the Community Center. The remainder will be green open space, which the mayor compared to Central Park in the middle of Manhattan (New York City).

“It’s going to be a very special place where families can come together, where our community can come together,” Mayor Meerbott added. “We’re on schedule and we’re just getting started and again, thank you guys for all being part of this historic journey.”
