One more reason not to like Tropical Storm Isaac is that the bad weather caused the 4th Annual Cutler Bay Open Golf Tournament to be re-scheduled. The new day is Saturday, September 22 at Redland Golf and Country Club. “Check-in begins at 10:00 a.m., and the shotgun start is at 11:00 a.m. If you have already registered for the tournament, please contact the Parks & Recreation Department at 305- 238-4166 before Friday, September 7th to confirm that you wish to keep your spot in the tournament. Any unconfirmed foursomes may be made available to groups on a waiting list. Speaking of Isaac, the storm also managed to dampen things a bit at the new Olive Garden restaurant in Cutler Bay, which held its grand opening on Monday, August 27. Not ideal timing, but at least Isaac is gone now and Cutler Bay’s newest eatery is still here, located at 20345 S Dixie Highway. Ah, just thinking about all those pasta dishes, soup and breadsticks is making us hungry…
Election news! The slate is set for the November elections in Cutler Bay. Jazmin Gonzalez tells us that the qualifying period for candidates ended on Friday, August 17, and we now know that Sue Ellen Loyzelle is running unopposed for Council Seat 2, while Vice Mayor Ernie Sochin will face challenger Ed Wolmers.
Cutler Bay held a Town Council Special Meeting on Thursday, August 30 at 5:00 p.m., just after our deadline so we don’t know as of this writing how it turned out. The reason for the meeting was to pick the new permanent Town Clerk, the position formerly held by Esther Coulson, and then briefly by Interim Clerk Missy Arocha, who had been the assistant to former Town Manager Steven Alexander before his departure. Getting complicated for you? Wait — it gets a little more so. Arocha was suddenly hired away from Cutler Bay by Village Clerk Meighan Alexander of the Village of Palmetto Bay, the town’s neighbor to the north. Meighan is the wife of Steven Alexander, who…well, we’ve explained that already. So as a result, the Town Council will be picking (or already has by the time you read this) the new Town Clerk from a group of fresh faces. Ah, the joys of municipal employment. Isn’t it a bit like musical chairs?
Mark your calendars! There will be a Town Hall Meeting at Palmetto Senior High September 27, at 7:00 p.m. The topic is the $1.2B Bond Referendum, and the meeting will be attended not only by the Town Council but also Dr. Lawrence Feldman, the District 9 Vice Chair of the School Board, and Superintendent of Schools Alberto Carvalho. If you want to learn more about the bond referendum or voice an opinion, that will be the time and place to do it. Palmetto Senior High is located at 7460 Southwest 118th Street in Pinecrest. If you read this in time, there’s a dedication ceremony for the new Cutler Bay Town Circulator Bus that will operate on a fixed route serving all of the residents within the Town. County Commissioner Lynda Bell and some Town Councilmembers will unveil the new local bus route for Cutler Bay residents at Pinewoods Villa Senior Citizen Community on Wednesday, September 5, at 10:00 a.m. That’s located at 8420 SW 188 Terrace in Cutler Bay. Palmetto Bay has operated its IBus circulator route for a few years now.
