The Town of Cutler Bay hosted a Hurricane Recovery Business Assistance Workshop for residents in the Council Chambers on Thursday, Oct. 12.

Conducted by the Miami-Dade Beacon Council in collaboration with CareerSource South Florida, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, Small Business Administration, Small Business Development Center, and other community partners, the purpose of the workshop was to connect local businesses with recovery experts.

A panel discussion took place during the workshop with experts providing businesses with information about hurricane relief programs and presenting “resiliency best practices.”

Miami-Dade Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava attended the workshop to welcome local businesses and introduce the “South Dade More To Explore” campaign. The More To Explore campaign aims to bring economic development, tourism, governmental leaders and local business organizations together to discuss how to mobilize economic development in South Miami-Dade County.

Commissioner Levine Cava was pleased with the presentation organized by the Miami-Dade Beacon Council, but said she had hoped more business people would attend. Only about 20 people were there other than the workshop presenters.

“Great info and resources,” Levine Cava said. “Many businesses were affected.”

After Hurricane Irma’s impact on the community many local businesses were not able to function for days or weeks. Many local businesses are still recovering after the storm, so the Businesses Assistance Workshop and the South Dade More To Explore campaign are intended to prioritize the needs of local businesses and continue to help economic development throughout South Dade.

“With the help from local businesses, our hurricane recovery efforts were efficient and successful following the impact of Hurricane Irma,” said Rafael G. Casals, town manager. “We are extremely grateful for their continued support of our community during a difficult time for our residents.

“We are proud to host events such as the Business Assistance Workshop, to ensure that our local businesses continue to flourish, as a strong relationship between local government and the business community is vital to the growth of the town,” he added.
