The Town of Cutler Bay hosted its third annual Masquerade Ball, an Active Adults special event, on Friday, Feb. 2, in the town’s Council Chambers. The usual seats were removed to make room for tables and chairs and for dancing.

Paola Perez, the town’s Events & Programs Specialist for the Department of Parks & Recreation, helped plan the event.

“There were an estimated 130 adults in attendance,” Perez said. “I am very pleased with the turnout. The adults enjoyed their time together in celebration of Valentine’s month. The adults were provided with complimentary masks; however, they were encouraged to get creative and bring their own. The attendees enjoyed an open bar, dessert station, photo booth and pasta bar during the event.”

There was a deejay who played the seniors favorite music while they took to the dance floor. The event’s presenting sponsors were Humana and The Oasis. The Active Adults event series is designed for town residents ages 60 and older.

Seat 2 Councilmember Suzy Lord attended the event and was pleased with how it turned out.

“The event was incredibly fun and well attended,” Councilmember Lord said. “The Active Adults program is not only a great idea but very necessary for our senior residents. Many of them are alone, widowed, with no family nearby. Our events bring them together and they have a sense of belonging and community. Many have formed very strong friendships through our program.

“Once a month we have a birthday party for the Active Adults and many times that is the only piece of birthday cake they will get for their birthday. I’m very proud of what we are doing for these residents, helping them get together and age in place,” she added.
Councilmember Lord is the Town Council Liaison for the program.

Through the Age-Friendly Action Plan, the town developed an Active Adults program for residents ages 60-plus that provides many monthly gatherings, lectures and resources. For more information, visit the Active Adults page at https://www.cutlerbay-fl.gov/parksrec/page/active-adults.
