Arecently completed drainage improvement project should greatly reduce flooding that has long been a problem for Cutler Bay residents within the Lakes by the Bay, Laguna Pointe and Catalina communities.
Local flooding in the roadway caused by any moderate to severe rains should be alleviated by the roadway and drainage improvements along SW 97th Avenue between SW 220th Street to SW 223rd Terrace that were completed in January. Town staff came to an agreement with Lennar Homes LLC, the developer of Lakes by the Bay Community, with the developer agreeing to provide funding for the project. The total project cost for the project was approximately $290,000.
“The new drainage improvements mitigate the previous flooding problems, enhance the neighborhood, and improve drivability,” said Alfredo Quintero, acting Public Works director. “The project involved replacing the existing undersized storm drainage utility system and the construction of new drainage structures. The enhanced drainage system will treat and remove water pollutants from the roadway and utilize the adjacent lake as a stormwater runoff.”
Cutler Bay Mayor Ed MacDougall said he appreciated the efforts of all involved.
“Because of staff’s commitment to work with local interests and partnerships designed to improve the town’s quality of life, these projects go forward more quickly,” MacDougall said. “I thank Lennar for their support in this project as well.”
