Town of Cutler Bay resident wins a free roof in contest
Gloria Mercugliano

Raise the Roof, a non-profit organization that provides a free roof annually to families in need, announced that it has awarded its seventh free roof to Gloria Mercugliano of Cutler Bay.

The organization hadn’t been able to put the customary finishing touches on the giveaway the past two years due to the pandemic, but this year it culminates in a block party with lots of activities, giveaways, raffles, music and refreshments as well as plenty of fun for the whole family. The festivities will take place on Apr. 30.

Mercugliano won her free roof by first being nominated earlier this year, when nominations were opened. As the organization does each year, Raise the Roof then evaluated each nomination and verified compliance with qualification requirements. Two finalists were selected, and the public then had the opportunity to vote for one of the two finalists on the organization’s website, raisetheroofmiami.org, through Apr. 3, 2022.

Mercugliano was able to obtain over 1,000 votes, which is the second-most in the event’s history.

“We are thrilled for Gloria and can’t wait to see the smile on her face when she has the new roof over her head,” said Candy Caboverde, co-founder and organization spokesperson.

“We feel so blessed and humbled to be in a position where we can make a real difference in a person’s life, particularly when that person is experiencing a hardship. Our dream is to make even more of an impact by raising a free roof over a needy family’s head several times a year. Last year we found a way to accomplish this and hope to do it again.”

Raise the Roof, a non-profit organization, was founded by City Roofing to help families in need. Company owners, Candy Caboverde and Mario Famada, recognized the strain of having a burden such as health issues or low income can have on families, particularly homeowners.

Since 2015, Raise the Roof, with the support of select local and national sponsors, has provided a free roof in Miami-Dade County to a family that is in immediate need of a roof replacement and is experiencing financial or other types of challenges.

“This year, we need the public’s help so that we can continue this labor of love. That’s why we started a Go Fund Me page to ensure Gloria gets the new roof she needs. Our goal is to raise $10,000 to make it happen.”

“It is our goal to alleviate the pressure that your family has been under, providing peace of mind concerning what’s over your home so that you can focus on what’s in your home and most precious — your family,” Caboverde said.
