The master plan for the Town of Cutler Bay’s Legacy Park and Municipal Complex project, a design including the new Town Hall and a large park area, was approved formally by the mayor and town council on Wednesday, June 28, during the regular Town Council Meeting.
The plan is based on the design created by Saltz Michelson Architects, Michael Graves Architecture & Design, and EDSA, selected back in April, with changes made after public input was gained from a number of meetings. The area of land on Old Cutler Road is part of what was known popularly as “the potato field” and was acquired by the town in exchange for the office building and parking area currently being used for the town hall and for additional considerations.
Cutler Bay Mayor Tim Meerbott said he is excited about the project that began in 2019.
“This is a big milestone for us,” Mayor Meerbott said in a video message for residents.
“There were 25 public involvement meetings and more than 900 comments, to help us design what I think is going to be the premiere park in all of Dade County. I think what our vice mayor Callahan said, I like the best — that this is not just a municipal center with a park, it’s a park with a municipal center.
“It creates a space for a farmers’ market and an amphitheater for events. Most of it is wide green space with lots of water features. The design is for traffic to be able to approach from all directions and no one neighborhood has to take the burden of it. Most of the entrances will be off Old Cutler Road and the Publix entrance. We’re building this together and that’s what I think is most important.”
The complex will feature an art garden, wetland area, Old Cutler Road trail, Town Hall, police station, parking garage, swimming pool, Community Center terrace, bermed amphitheater, interactive water feature, food truck staging area, wetland lookouts, golf cart parking area, pond, stage and event pavilion, open lawn and picnic area, market and event space, vita trail and tot lot play area.
The Legacy Park and Municipal Complex is adjacent to the new Publix Supermarket location and a small privately owned out parcel that is currently vacant. Contractors will be selected to do the construction, and an expected completion time for the project has not been announced.
