Although Cutler Bay’s administrative offices were closed for Memorial Day, the town showed support for the military in the community on Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20.
In a program that ran from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lakes by the Bay Park, 8551 SW 216 St., residents had a chance to learn about the various roles of the military and each branch of the armed forces.
There were military, fire and police displays and demonstrations, K-9 demonstrations by the Miami-Dade County Police Department, Home Depot Kids Workshop, inflatable battlefield obstacle course, rock climbing wall and complimentary snow cones, popcorn and cotton candy. Food trucks were available selling other food items.
Kimberly Holmes, Special Events coordinator for the Department of Parks & Recreation, was excited about how well it turned out.
“I would say we had roughly 200 people in attendance throughout the day,” Holmes said. “The town’s Armed Forces Day celebration was free for everyone and it aimed to better unify civilian families with all branches of our military.
“Event attendees were able to enjoy food trucks and live music from Matt Anderson as they learned about the military with attractions such as Humvee and A-ATV vehicles from the U.S. Army, a helicopter, DARE vehicle, vehicle from the Miami-Dade Police Department, and a fire truck from the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue,” she added.
The event was sponsored by TD Bank and Peterson’s Harley Davidson Motorcycles.
