This year’s Cutler Bay’s “Halloween Spooktacular” turned out to be a hugely popular event.
Taking place on two nights, Friday, Oct. 28, and Saturday, Oct. 29, at Cutler Ridge Park, an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people attended the free, family friendly event.
The traditional “Trunk or Treat” distribution of candy happened on Oct. 28, followed by a costume contest for a variety of age groups. Mayor Tim Meerbott and Councilmembers B.J. Duncan and Suzy Lord greeted attendees and helped crown the costume contest winners.
On Oct. 29 was the Golf Cart Parade featuring a great variety of spooky decorated golf carts that followed the usual parade route through neighborhoods before returning to the park. The parade of carts was set to be limited to 300, but town staffers believe that as many as 500 participated. After the parade it was Movie Night with the film starting about 8:30 p.m.
Town Manager Rafael Casals was impressed with the size of the event.
“Our Halloween Spooktacular has become the biggest event we host year-round, and this year we had the largest turnout to date,” Casals said. “When we saw last year how popular this event has grown and some of the challenges that posed — particularly with the golf cart parade — we decided to make it a two-night event, along with a few other tweaks, to make it a safer and smoother experience for residents and their families to enjoy. We’re very pleased with how this event has turned out and for the wonderful participation of our staff, police, vendors, volunteers, and attendees.”
One of the traditional features, a Haunted House done in the park’s swimming pool building in years past, was changed this year to an outdoor Haunted Maze. Michelle Horne, who works for the town, designed, set up and ran the maze. She estimates that 1,100 people went through the constructed scary labyrinth on just one night.
“We had actors — members of my staff dressed up in costumes — in the maze,” Horne said. “We had some props, but mostly it was live scares. It was fun.”
