Parks & Rec… The Concerned Citizens of Cutler Bay will have its monthly meeting on Tuesday July 7, from 7-9 p.m. at the Cutler Ridge United Methodist Church, and the topic is the town’s parks. Cutler Bay’s Parks and Recreation Director Etienne Bejarano will be the guest speaker. The date of the meeting is especially significant because it marks the first anniversary, to the day, of Mr. Bejarano’s appointment. He will discuss the Town’s parks, improvements, programs, and the vision for the future of the Parks and Recreation Department. And he will introduce some new Parks employees. The church is located at 20740 Old Cutler Road, in Cutler Bay. The group’s president, Steve Zarzecki, tells us that, “All are invited. Admission is free. Coffee and donuts will be served.” For information call Steve at 305-255-4351. The Concerned Citizens is a non-profit civic organization whose purpose is “to promote community awareness and citizen participation.”
Students, take note! If you’re a student between the ages of 13 and 18 and reside within the boundaries of the Town of Cutler Bay, you can participate in town government in a real way and learn how it works in the process. Members are wanted for the Town of Cutler Bay Youth Council Committee, the purpose of which is to stimulate community service and foster a better understanding among young people of how municipal government works. The youth council will advise and make appropriate recommendations to the town council regarding issues of special interest to youths. The Youth Council Committee shall consist of eleven students and shall be appointed as follows: Ten students will be appointed by the Town Council (two per Councilmember) and one student will be appointed by the School District. There’ll be at least one regular meeting per month from August through May of 2016. The application is available online on the town’s website at www.cutlerbay-fl.gov/. Interested resident students must provide a resume and a list of qualifications or other relevant information to the office of town clerk by Friday, July 31. Storm warning… This may be of interest to Cutler Bay residents as well. Palmetto Bay Mayor Eugene Flinn and Councilmember Karyn Cunningham hosted a hurricane preparation presentation at Village Hall on June 15. Robert Molleda, who is the Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service spoke about seasonal predictions, NWS info and services during a storm, and awareness tips. A selection of brochures and fact sheets were made available by the village’s Public Works Department. Turnout for the meeting, which had a lot of work put into it, was surprisingly light. Possibly the fact that it’s been 23 years since Hurricane Andrew and 10 years since Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma has caused some residents to grow complacent about storms, but all would do well to remember how much damage and inconvenience they can cause.
