Town’s Police Unit to discuss safety and crime at meeting

Miami's Community Newspapers

Better hurry on this one, since it’s the night of Tuesday, February 4! The Concerned Citizens of Cutler Bay are hosting, “by popular demand,” the Cutler Bay Police Department’s Neighborhood Resource Unit to discuss safety tips, crime statistics, neighborhood watch, and recent news. The time is 7:00 p.m. at the Cutler Ridge United Methodist Church, 20740 Old Cutler Road, here in Cutler Bay. The Concerned Citizens of Cutler Bay is a nonprofit civic organization, founded in 1954, whose meetings are conducted in a friendly round-table format. All of the Cutler Bay Council Members are invited to meetings. For more information, call Steve Zarzecki at 305-255-4351.

Election correction… Sorry, but an item we ran in the last issue contained an error concerning who is up for re-election this coming November and who is not, so here is the official word straight from the Town Clerk, Debra Eastman:

“I would like to clarify that there will be three open seats to fill (four year terms) at the Nov. 4, 2014 General Election. The office of Mayor (incumbent Mayor MacDougall), Seat 1 (incumbent Mary Ann Mixon) and Seat 3 (incumbent Peggy Bell). The offices of Vice Mayor and Council Member Seat 2 were filled in the 2012 General Election where Vice Mayor Sochin and Council Member Loyzelle were successfully elected. They are serving a four year term that will expire in 2016.”

We’ll keep you posted on other election news as it develops.

Foodies, take note! You definitely won’t want to miss the Fourth Annual Taste of the Bay festival on February 23, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., featuring many local restaurants ranging from Chinese to pizza to chicken wings to ice cream and chocolates. There will also be a petting zoo, pony rides, a Car Show, music by the Road Kings, a belly dancer, arts and crafts displays, and a bounce house for entertainment.

Tickets to the family-oriented event are free if picked up at participating restaurants and businesses. Tickets at the gate will be $5 each. Taste of the Bay is sponsored by the Cutler Bay Business Association. It takes place at Palmetto Bay Village Center, 18001 Old Cutler Road, in Palmetto Bay. This is one of the signature events each year and is very popular.

Golfers, better mark this on your calendars. We hear from Dr. James A. Thomas and Mick Jones of the Economic Development Council that the EDC’s 16th Annual Steven J. Cranman Memorial Golf Tournament will take place March 10, at South Miami-Dade’s Premier Private Deering Bay Yacht Golf & Country Club. There are a number of corporate sponsors lined up already, but we hear there are many opportunities for sponsors; including tee signs, foursomes, advertising opportunities, Presenting Sponsorships, Corporate Sponsorships, as well as Raffle Prize donations. For more info and golfer registration, please contact the EDC at 305-378-9470 or by email at

And don’t forget the next Movie Night at Cutler Ridge Park. That’s on Friday, February 28, at 7 p.m., and the feature is DESPICABLE ME 2. Location: Cutler Ridge Park, 10100 SW 200 Street (the Elementary School Field). More details later…

Light those candles! Mayor Ed MacDougall’s birthday is on February 8th. Many happy returns!
