Live Arts Miami, The Deering Estate and #ARTiculatingClimate are proud to present the world premiere of Prelude to 2100, an immersive theatrical experience imagining a future Miami, conceived, curated and co-directed by Susan Caraballo, written by Juan C. Sánchez, co-directed by Jennifer de Castroverde, and created in collaboration with over 30 multi-disciplinary artists.
Set in 2050, the Deering Estate has been converted into a residential complex made up of tenants who have been displaced from different parts of the world due to climate change. When rooms become available, they decide to host their first OPEN HOUSE, while re-opening partially as an art space.
“Guests” will meet the residents who are adapting to a new world and living alternatively: JIMMY from Central Florida, who had first-hand experience with sugar cane burns; Venezuelan MAGDALENA, who made a promise to herself not to bring a child into this fractured world; ANITA who lost her home in Liberty City due to climate gentrification; among others. Their personal lives and conflicts, and other strange phenomena, get in the way of the tour.
“The work explores notions of community, climate change, loss and love while incorporating environmental history, scientific facts, magical realism, and speculative fiction with the intention of empowering audiences toward an affirming tomorrow,” Caraballo said.
Prelude to 2100 consists of two experiential components: the TOUR and the OPEN HOUSE. The TOUR provides audiences with an intimate walking tour of the complex and introduces many of its current residents through an immersive theatrical experience. The OPEN HOUSE features interactive installations by artists Laurencia Strauss, Kerry Phillips, and the Department of Reflection, plus dance works by Olujimi Dance and Sandra Portal-Andreu. Other artworks featured are by AMLgMATED, Cara Despain, Alicia Eggert, Gustavo Matamoros, Jits Microfarm, The Queer Theory Library, Quinaz Studio, Carrie Sieh, Fereshteh Toosi, and Kim Yantis & Lucinda Linderman.
Prelude to 2100 by Susan Caraballo is the final installment of six new performance works addressing climate change and sustainability created by Live Art Miami’s LALA Artists in Residence. The Live Arts Lab Alliance (LALA) residency program empowers local performing artists from different disciplines to generate new work and establish new networks of creative feedback and collaboration.
