Working for You: A Recap of the Commission Meeting

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Dear Friends and Residents of District 8,

The Board of County Commissioners held a County Commission Meeting (BCC). There was also a presentation by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue on their K-9 Peer Response Unit and we were lucky to meet a lot of the emotional support dogs who assisted those at Surfside.

Please read below for a few of the key items accomplished on your behalf at today’s BCC meeting:

Miami Seaquarium
The Miami Seaquarium, a countywide asset, first opened its doors in 1955 and over 60 years later, now has the opportunity for new operational leadership under The Dolphin Company. The Dolphin Company is the largest parks operator in Latin America and has displayed its commitment to the preservation and conservation of animals by accomplishing gold standard accreditation.

My colleagues and I approved the assignment of the existing lease agreement with the support of our new Zoo Miami Director, Will Elder, to The Dolphin Company; they will improve services, correct existing issues and prioritize our marine life. As always, Miami-Dade County will continue to maintain oversight and accountability to ensure the health and safety of our animals.

Sabrina Cohen Foundation Adaptive Recreation Center
Everyone deserves the opportunity to experience everything Miami-Dade County has to offer, especially when it comes to our famous beaches. Today, my colleagues and I passed a resolution urging the United States Congress and the Florida Legislature to provide funding for the Sabrina Cohen Foundation Adaptive Recreation Center. This additional funding will contribute to expanding infrastructure and creating more accessibility for people living with disabilities. Make sure to follow the Sabrina Cohen Foundation (@sabrinacohenfoundation) to keep up with the amazing work they are doing. I thank Commissioner Higgins for bringing this important item.

Brownfield Designation
In 2018, the Board of County Commissioners approved a zoning application to develop underutilized land located at the Northwest corner of SW 248 Street and SW 120 Avenue in District 8. Today, my colleagues and I approved the beginning of the review process to designate this land as a ‘brownfield’. This designation will commit the developer to rid the property of any potential environmental contaminants.
