Hanukkah Celebration, Menorah Lighting added to Cutler Bay’s holiday festivities

Something brand new is being added this year to the already lively, fun-filled mix of holiday events in Cutler Bay. The Hanukkah Festival in Cutler Bay will feature Wynwood’s famous Graffiti Artist DISEM who will present a graffiti Menorah performance followed by a Giant Menorah Lighting.

Festivities take place on Sunday, Dec. 18, the first night of Hanukkah, beginning 2 p.m., at Cutler Ridge Park, 10100 SW 200 St.

Hanukkah is the eight-day Jewish “Festival of Lights,” which this year begins on the evening of Dec. 18. Each evening at sunset an additional candle is lit to commemorate the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem some 2,000 years ago. The holiday also celebrates the miracle of one day’s worth of pure ritual oil burning for eight days until a new supply could be obtained.

“The message of Hanukkah is one of hope in the face of extreme adversity,” explained Rabbi Yossi Wolff, executive director of Chabad of Cutler Bay & Homestead. “It’s a message with broad appeal to everyone who believes in religious freedom and that faith and determination can triumph against even the most overwhelming odds.”

People of all ages will enjoy singing traditional songs like Rock of Ages and The Dreidel Song, and eating the free delectable holiday treats, including tasty potato latkes (pancakes) with applesauce and sour cream, jelly doughnuts, plus chocolate gelt (coins) and prizes for the children. The event will feature a graffiti artist, a game truck, Hanukkah movie, live deejay, free gifts, raffle and much more.

Chabad of Cutler Bay & Homestead is a non-profit organization dedicated to Jewish worship and study, and to fostering an appreciation of Jewish cultural heritage.

As spiritual advisor to the Chabad Jewish Center of Cutler Bay & Homestead, Rabbi Wolff will be distributing free menorahs and candles to people wishing to celebrate Hanukkah at the event.
