Throughout the morning, students showed off the international education focus of the school.

Miami-Dade Public Schools superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho, School Board member Dr. Lawrence S. Feldman, principal Raul Calzadilla, and district representatives recently gathered at Air Base K-8 Center for International Education and to break ground on the school’s General Obligation Bond (GOB) construction project.

The total GOB investment of $8 million will provide for many improvements including foreign language, science, computer and general classrooms; demolition of existing portable; new parent drop-off; covered walkway; staff parking; basketball courts; dining shelter, and new classroom technology.

The school board commissioned Rodriguez Architects Inc. as the architect of record for the project and Thornton Construction Company Inc. as the project manager.

“The construction of our new building as part of the General Obligation Bond is not only a game-changer for the Air Base K-8 Center, it also represents a historic commitment to the future of public education in our community,” Calzadilla said. “As we prepare to celebrate the 60th anniversary of our school’s founding, I could not think of a better gift.”

Isabella Ziarno, a student at Air Base, added, “Air Base K-8 soars on the wings of cultural discovery, and now not only can we fly above the clouds and sky, but we can reach the stars.”
