People driving past the Cornerstone United Methodist Church on Old Cutler Road in Cutler Bay may not notice the signs in the yard but full scale remodeling work has been completed on the Cornerstone Kids Preschool just in time for the Aug. 21 opening.

Gerrie McClary, Cornerstone Kids Preschool board chair, explained how much work went into the project during the summer break.

“This summer the classrooms received a major renovation with quiet energy efficient air conditioning, storm impact windows, and fresh paint,” McClary said. “Bathrooms were enlarged and upgraded to current code; the parking lot was redesigned and repaved, and a school dropoff area will be added.

“Classrooms will be ready for the opening of school Aug. 21, while renovations continue in other parts of the facility,” McClary added.

Cornerstone Kids Preschool, also known as Cutler Ridge United Methodist Kindergarten (CRUMK), is located at 20740 Old Cutler Rd. in Cutler Bay. The school is open year round from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., except on holidays. Tours can be scheduled between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m.

Monday through Friday, or anyone can come in to visit and pick up a brochure. Registration is currently open and enrollment is ongoing.

The preschool has been serving the community for the past 45 years by preparing young children ages 18 months to 5 years for kindergarten. It is a Gold Seal Christian preschool, accredited by United Methodist Association of Preschools (UMAP), licensed with the Florida Department of Children and Families, and is a VPK and Quality Counts provider.

“We believe that part of our success is having small groups assigned to our carefully selected teachers in the classroom,” McClary said.

“Students are individually nurtured in a well-planned and prepared environment, using age appropriate activities. The dedicated staff is certified in the Early Learning Education field, many with a minimum of 10 years in the area of education. Teachers use the ‘Creative Curriculum’ to guide students through their milestones during this important stage of their lives.

“At Cornerstone Kids Preschool, we understand the importance of addressing each child wholly, therefore daily classroom Bible time and once-a-week Chapel time with Pastor Paul Cook make character development a scheduled curriculum component.”

Lorena Escoto is the preschool director and started in July of this year.

“Everyone is very excited to have the place beautified and improved for the community,” Escoto said. “I feel very positive. I’m very excited about the program itself. It’s very academic but still using the Creative Curriculum which targets children who have different needs. It doesn’t matter if they’re more mathematical or more laboratory inclined; it’s important to have a curriculum that embraces all different types of learners. “I’ve had three boys and two were very mathematical but the third was completely different. It’s a whole new ball game and I realize how important it is for not only parents but teachers and everyone to embrace that because it’s the only way to help our children go forward no matter what their journey in life might be.”
