SMDCAC offers an exciting lineup for Summer 2019

The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC) is celebrating the summer with an exciting lineup of performances, from renowned dance companies and jazz bands to a special 50th anniversary rock tribute.

While many of South Florida’s performing arts destinations use the summer months as a hiatus to prepare for the upcoming season, SMDCAC is continuing to provide residents with cultural programming that is composed of locally, nationally and internationally recognized artists.

SMDCAC Schedule of Events:

Miami Lyric Opera — La Generentola (Cinderella) — Saturday, July 6, 8 p.m., and Sunday, July 7, 4 p.m. — Rossini’s charming take on the Cinderella story. Don’t miss the cast of Miami Lyric Opera in this timeless tale of love.

Dimensions Dance Theatre Of Miami — “An Evening Of Premiere Ballets” — Saturday, July 13, 8 p.m., and Sunday, July 14, 3 p.m. —Hailed by The New York Times as “athletic, energetic, and sexy,” Dimensions Dance Theatre of Miami turns up the summertime heat with an all new, must-see program bookended by two exhilarating world premiere ballets: Bolero by Yanis Pikieris inspired by Maurice Ravel’s famous work of the same name, and Equus by Ariel Rose set to the intense string compositions of Philip Glass.

Siempre Flamenco — “A Nuestro Ritmo” — Saturday, July 20, 7 and 9 p.m., and Sunday, July 21, 3:30 p.m. — Siempre Flamenco presents the world premiere of “A Nuestro Ritmo,” a new concert event featuring an international cast of flamenco musicians and dancers.

Wendy Pedersen and Jim Gasior — “A Tribute To Nancy Wilson” —Friday, Aug. 2, 8:30 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 3, 8:30 p.m. — Two of South Florida’s most enduring and favorite performers, vocalist Wendy Pedersen and pianist Jim Gasior, present an evening tribute to the great Nancy Wilson.

Sammy Figueroa and His Latin Jazz Explosion — Saturday, Aug. 10, 8:30 p.m. — Grammy nominee, legendary percussionist, and radio personality Sammy Figueroa has long been regarded as one of the world’s great musicians. His band Jazz Explosion, sometimes referred to as “the Latin Yellowjackets,” is considered to be one of the most sophisticated examples of Latin jazz, combining the excitement of Latin rhythms with the beauty and precision of a Pat Metheny or Brad Mehldau.

Classic Albums Live: The Rolling Stones – “Let It Bleed” —

Saturday, Aug. 17, 8 p.m. — A recreation of the famous 1969 Rolling Stones album, this concert features songs that became staples of the band and on rock radio stations for decades to come, including Gimme Shelter and You Can’t Always Get What You Want.

Chris Thomas Band – “Sinatra To Soul” — Friday, Aug. 30, 8 p.m. —Chris Thomas has the style and swagger of Sinatra and the performance excitement of James Brown and Bruno Mars. The Chris Thomas Band specializes in the performance of vintage Sinatra, soulful Motown, as well as original music and current popular songs custom arranged by its own band members.
Tango Lovers – “I Am Tango” — Saturday, Oct. 19, 8 p.m. —

With an ensemble of 24 world-renowned dancers, singers and musicians, “I Am Tango” by Tango Lovers presents a distinctive tango experience by staging its artistic evolution over time. The genre is represented by a central character named “Tango” who evolves through different ages and cultures while maintaining the essence of the music that made its mark all over the world.
