The Town of Cutler Bay is experiencing an ongoing problem in an environmentally sensitive area that is a Protected Mitigation Site. Officials and staff are seeking the help of residents to solve this problem.
In the portion of land north and south of SW 224th Street and 97th Avenue there has been repeated illegal dumping of trash and debris in the area. There also is a problem with motorized vehicles such as ATVs and dirt bikes illegally crossing into the area and disturbing or harming the environment, which is home to a variety of migratory birds.
“Many of these birds make their nests on the ground, making them particularly vulnerable to motorized vehicles riding through,” said Rafael Casals, town manager. “These birds, and their nests, are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Our town police and the Code Compliance Department are on alert and constantly monitoring the area to prevent this from happening, however, we need your help as well. If you witness these violations, please report it to the town.”
