Kendall Regional Burn Center recognized for National Burn Awareness Week

Committed to the care and improvement of human life as South Florida’s number one burn hospital, Kendall Regional Medical Center (KRMC) was recognized during this year’s National Burn Awareness Week, Feb. 3-9.

Every 65 seconds, someone in the U.S. sustains a burn injury serious enough to need treatment. Children under the age of 16 account for 26 percent of all admissions to burn centers. Most of those injuries are scalds, and most of them are preventable.

Kendall Regional’s Burn Team put together a video with a few tips on how to prevent a serious burn injury, which can be found on their Facebook page www.facebook.com/KendallRMC.

Tips include:

• Children grow fast and can reach new dangerous things every day. Supervision is the single most important factor in preventing burns.

• Coffee is often served at 175°F, making it high-risk for causing immediate, severe scald burns. Be cautious when serving or drinking coffee.

• Never carry hot liquids while carrying a child.

• Never place hot liquids on low coffee tables that are in reach of children.

KRMC hosted a “Lunch & Learn” for their burn nurses, which educated their burn nurses on some insightful facts and treatment strategies when dealing with a burn patient.

NBC 6’s Sheli Muniz also helped spreading awareness on burn prevention during this important week by sharing the story of a seven-year old patient, Jade Rodriguez, at Kendall Regional that was severely burned.

The Center received two proclamations from Miami-Dade County Commissioner Joe A. Martinez and School Board Member Lubby Navarro proclaiming Feb. 3-9, 2019, as National Burn Awareness Week.

Due to their efforts, the burn center received a tribute from State Representative Anthony Rodriguez recognizing the hospital for its “valuable contributions to the residents of the State of Florida” and for being a “vital service center for the community.”
