Miami Christian School Basketball dominates sports scene

As the basketball season comes to a close, as of this writing, Miami Christian School’s Girls’ Basketball Team is ranked number 1 in Florida, Class 2A – and undefeated.

Meanwhile the MCS Boys’ Basketball Team is ranked number 1 in Miami-Dade County of both public and private schools. This past December, the MCS Boys Basketball Team defeated Patrick School, the number 1 team in New Jersey, and the number 4 team in the US 63-56 at the Kruel Classic in Coral Springs.

On the performing arts front, the MCS concert band and choir performed for the Christmas Concert held in December. As always, under the director of Derek Shute assisted this time by MCS alumnus, Johnny Rez, who got his break on The Voice and frequently comes back to MCS where it all began. From the elementary choir to a talented middle and high school musicians, the performances were inspired.

On the academic front, Miami Christian School high-school students participated in the Computer Science Education Week’s “Hour of Code” with computer activities designed to demystify computer code, and to show students that anyone can learning the basics of coding and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with one-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.

Community outreach is important to MCS as students volunteer for walks, and more. For the past two years, MCS Senior Allison Bean has competed with her mother representing Miami Christian School in the Coral Gables Rotary Chili Cook Off. The two, who will compete again Feb. 25, 1 – 5 p.m., won best chili for MCS in their category last year and brought home a cash prize for the school. This Annual Chili Cook Off benefits the Rotary Foundation of Coral Gables that annually awards thousands of dollars in grants to local non profits and international outreach programs.

Finally, MCS Seniors continue to get multiple scholarship offers. Chrissy Rosillo has been accepted to Lynn University and offered $77,200 in scholarships and grants over four years. In addition, she has offers from Rollins University with a $96,000 scholarship over four years and Stetson University with a $135,056 offer over four years.

A graduate of the University of Florida with a major in Spanish, Burns has an extensive background in advertising, marketing and reciprocal trade, travel , non profit consulting and management. Before joining Miami's Community Newspapers as a columnist and marketing specialist, Gloria was the Executive Director of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee (6 yrs.) and first Executive Director of the Coral Gables Community Foundation (14 yrs.) and the Pinecrest Community Foundation (1 ½ yrs) . Burns' volunteer activities led her to become a columnist for Community Newspapers writing Gloria’s Gab, that focuses on the non-profit activity, and a host of an online show, Gloria's Gab LIVE. Gloria serves the board of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables as Civic and Charity Chair, and is involved in the club's International Committee. She is an active Life Member of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee and is Secretary of the Merrick Festival. She serves on the board of directors of the Coral Gables Woman' Club as Publicity Chair and also coordinates the club's monthly fundraiser for various charities with Gringo Bingo at Clutch Burger. In addition, Gloria participates in numerous other charitable events and is a member of the Business Forum Group, Profit Inc., the Greater Miami Festival & Events Association and the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. In other volunteer activity, Gloria helps Miami Christian School with fund-raising and PR; is an Ambassador and volunteers for events for A Safe Haven for Newborns. She is an active member of the Music Ministry at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where she enjoys singing in the choir every weekend.
